1 Corinthians 12:12 (KJV) – "For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ."
In the animated world of The Smurfs, Papa Smurf was the wise and respected leader of the village. He had knowledge, experience, and an understanding of how things should function among his fellow Smurfs. Then, there was Brainy Smurf—his eager but overly ambitious protégé, who always believed he could do exactly what Papa Smurf did, without the necessary wisdom, patience, or experience.
At first, Brainy’s actions seemed harmless. He wanted to help, and he wanted to lead. But time and time again, his rash decisions and lack of preparation led to chaos. The show often humorously portrayed his failures with the phrase "he smurfed up", reminding viewers that stepping outside of one’s calling can lead to confusion, division, and disorder.
This fictional example mirrors a real-life spiritual truth. Many people, like Brainy Smurf, step ahead of their leaders, their calling, or God’s timing, believing they are ready—only to realize they were never meant to operate in that role at that moment.
1. Knowing Your Place in the Body of Christ
The Bible teaches that everyone has a purpose and a role in the kingdom of God. No one position is more valuable than another, but attempting to operate in a role that does not belong to you creates disorder instead of progress.
1 Corinthians 12:14-18 (KJV) – "For the body is not one member, but many. If the foot shall say, Because I am not the hand, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body? ... But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased him."
Each believer has been placed strategically by God in the role where they will be the most effective. Trying to forcefully take over another role, or stepping beyond what God has prepared for you, leads to spiritual misalignment.
Brainy Smurf believed that simply watching Papa Smurf made him capable of leading in the same way. However, watching is not the same as being called and equipped for leadership.
2. The Danger of Stepping Ahead of Leadership
When someone ignores God-appointed leadership and moves ahead of their calling, they can bring damage not only to themselves but to the entire community. This happens in the church, at work, in families, and in friendships.
God sets leaders in place for a reason. Leadership is not simply about having the right answers—it is about having wisdom, patience, and divine authority to guide others correctly.
Hebrews 13:17 (KJV) – "Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account."
Stepping ahead of a God-ordained leader without preparation, permission, or proper understanding can hurt the entire group. Brainy Smurf often disrupted the Smurf village because he wanted leadership but lacked wisdom. In reality, he caused problems rather than progress.
3. Learning from Biblical Examples of Premature Actions
Throughout Scripture, there are examples of people who stepped ahead of their calling—and suffered the consequences.
A. King Saul’s Disobedience
1 Samuel 13:8-14 (KJV) – Saul grew impatient and offered a sacrifice himself instead of waiting on the prophet Samuel. His impatience cost him his kingdom, showing that moving ahead of God’s appointed leadership leads to failure.
B. Moses Striking the Rock
Numbers 20:8-12 (KJV) – Instead of following God’s instructions, Moses struck the rock in frustration. His rash decision cost him the opportunity to enter the Promised Land, showing that acting outside of divine instruction carries consequences.
Brainy Smurf’s constant failure to wait on Papa Smurf mirrors these biblical examples—people who thought they knew better but ultimately proved they were unprepared.
4. Staying Within Your Calling and Waiting on God
It is not wrong to desire growth, but growth must come through preparation and God’s guidance. Moving ahead without His confirmation leads to:
Confusion – Stepping into something you were not prepared for leads to frustration.
Disorder – Ignoring leadership causes division and chaos.
Failure – Without God’s blessing, efforts will eventually crumble.
Ecclesiastes 3:1 (KJV) – "To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven."
If God has not called or prepared you for something, moving into it prematurely will never produce lasting success.
5. How to Remain in Your Calling and Walk in Wisdom
If you feel tempted to step ahead, remember these steps to stay grounded in God’s timing:
A. Seek Confirmation in Prayer – Before making any move, ask God if it is truly your season to step forward. B. Follow Leadership and Instruction – Respect those who have been placed over you. They have wisdom and experience that will guide you. C. Be Patient in Growth – God prepares people over time. Do not rush the process—trust His timing. D. Accept Where You Are Right Now – Even if you desire more responsibility, trust that God has you where you are for a reason.
Conclusion
Brainy Smurf constantly failed to wait on Papa Smurf’s leadership, believing that watching was the same as being ready. In reality, his rash decisions caused problems rather than bringing solutions.
Just like Brainy Smurf, many people step ahead of their calling in various areas—church, work, family, school—thinking they are ready when they are not. However, Scripture teaches that every person has a God-appointed role, and when people remain in their calling, everything flows in divine order.
Waiting on God’s timing and trusting leadership ensures success, prevents unnecessary failures, and keeps believers aligned with their purpose. Instead of "smurfing up," trust God to open doors at the right time and in the right way.
